An AU set in early 30s Paris, in which Rodney is an over-protected son, studying away from home for the first time. He arrives in a city that is teeming with a greedy underworld of perversion, lust and booze, which he is shocked by and drawn to all at once.
His usual acerbic self, he spends his first few months either studying or sitting in his room (in a hotel in the Latin Quarter, naturally) reading, watching the city frolick outside his window from the corner of his eye, half wanting, half afraid.
Then, one night, there is a knock at his door, and it's his downstairs neighbour - alleged downstairs neighbour, since Rodney has never seen him before - a louche underdressed boy about Rodney's age - on the verge of being a man. It's John, of course. He's locked himself out.
"What do you want me to do about it?" Rodney snaps, distractedly aware of losing his place in his novel as well as the loose fall of hair accross the man's forehead.
( Would you mind if I stayed here for a while? Only, it's raining out. )
