Why OTW rocks my socks
Oct. 27th, 2008 12:12 pmI'd never really thought about it before. I mean, in principal I was very much behind its aims, but in practise it had always been a very abstract thing for me.
That is, until Youtube took down the vid for Missed the Saturday Dance due to copyright violation of the song.
My automatic reaction was disappointment, but I wasn't all that sad. In some ways (see how useless I am at saving copies of vids, artwork, etc.) the things that I make for fandom are ultimately transient to me. I put them out there and then let them float away, if you like, and have never been very good at actively making an effort to preserve them. So I figured MTSD would float away and that would be that.
What did slightly worry me, however, was the potential for litigation. In my wilder moments, I envisioned a snowball effect of each piece I'd done being targeted, resulting in my eventual expulsion from the internet as a whole. (Hey, I said 'wilder moments'.)
So when
cesperanza contacted me to say, basically, "Hey, this is what OTW is for!" to suddenly have this whole organisation behind me, felt amazing! People that know about things like laws and rulings and, er, stuff. Basically, people that have got my back. And yours!
So my vid is online again, and OTW are taking a fighting stance on it; hosting it and everything, so, yay.
If you can, take a moment to go to see MTSD at Open Doors and watch the vid again; a little mini take-a-stand-against-the-man *g*

And if you're feeling extra-affluent, donate to or become a member of OTW! I did *g*
