I've been feeling listless and sick the last few days, and while some interesting things have happened, haven't had the will to write them down. Or at least not in an interesting way. So here, in list form, are some of the highlights of the past week:
1. Drinking a glass of champagne that cost... wait for it... £10!
2. Seeing a guy mug a female bus conductor on a jam-packed bus.
3. Getting told off by a celebrity.
4. Wilby Wonderful arriving! ♥
5. Discussing the possibility of a lotrips AU in which Dom and Billy are Ewoks in love. Don't ask.
6. Watching Wilby Wonderful.
Next week is international women's week - which is why my work is so manic; the festival is then - and I may not be able to post again before then, so I wanted to point it out as something amazing to celebrate. There's loads of information about the day here.
I really enjoyed this. It worked for me in ways that I wasn't at all expecting; always a nice surprise. Good acting - Rebecca Jenkins was especially moving - and a nice, tightly written script - always important in this kind of ensemble piece.
I was mostly pleasantly surprised with the way MacIvor wrote women. Whereas the majority of films written by men seem to me to usually have female characters that are men's versions of women, these characters - in all their flaws and foibles - really rang-true for me. And I can offer no larger compliment.
The only thing I really had a problem with was the teenage relationship, which struck me as rather bizarrely throw-back to the 50s. ***spoiler*** I think girls nowadays know that if a boy tries to manipulate them into sex, it's perfectly valid for them to tell the guy to fuck off. In fact rather mandatory if he uses the "blue balls" line. However, I did enjoy her relationship with her mother.
Finally, it was pretty well directed. A couple of off-moments, some decisions I would consider unwise, like too many tight shots and not enough establishing on occassion, but meh, pretty immaterial. However, I did think the film suffered from an over-abuse of soundtrack. Someone needs to tell MacIvor that sometimes as scene is made more powerful by the lack of sensitive music.
And, of course, CALLUMSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Oh man, I think Duck may be my perfect guy. Strong, silent type who can get rough when he needs to *cough*. And has those upper arms. And that shirt. And that nape to his neck. And makes out with other guys.
