Nov. 22nd, 2008 07:11 pmI actually liked Keller in this episode! I find that they write her with extremely poor consistency, and she ranges from okay to blah to irritating depending on the episode. But here, she was great - spoke her mind, fun, interesting, commanding... dare I say almost multi-faceted. But...
Having said that, is anyone else disturbed by how, in Martin Gero's world, girlfriend = Mom? Honestly, at one point I was expecting her to tell Rodney that if he didn't start to mind his manners, he'd be grounded for a month (young man). As I said, I liked her, and had no problem with her behaviour, but as a friend to Rodney. But as a woman on her first date? That is just... weird, Gero.
So, yeah, still not convinced about McKay/Keller. It's obvious that the actors really get along and have fun together, and this bleeds through into their on-screen relationship... but I get no other chemistry from them at all. I give it... five months max before he's staying all night in the lab so that he doesn't have to go home and listen to her try to make him into a soft fluffy-bunny-person, while at the same time she's having to close her eyes and count to ten every time he makes an acerbic comment to stop herself stabbing him in the neck with her scalpel.
On a more superficial note:
1. Wet!Jewel is as hot as freeze lighting is cold. (See what I did there?)
2. Yeah, those boots were a shame though.
Told you these point were frivolous! You were warned!
3. Date!Rodney is also hot. But in-charge!Rodney is hottest of all.
4. The bad guy from Twins!!! Whenever I see actors from movies in SG:A episodes I always have an internal moment of 'Huh. Didn't know they'd shot that in Vancouver'. *g*
5. They had two whole women working on whiteboards! And those silly feminists are still complaining? *eyeroll*
6. Is it me, or does Martin Gero really wish he was writing rom-coms and not sci-fi. I mean, to go into it all would be spectacularly complicated*, but suffice it to say: his heart just isn't in it at all.
So to sum up... I didn't hate this as much as I could have. A bit too heavy-handed with all the romance rubbish, and not enough team for me. But any episode where I come out of it feeling new love for a female character is a win in my book. So even if I did have a moment of 'Oi!' when she took Rodney's hand, she's still way higher in my estimation that she was a the beginning of the episode.
*Get it? :P
